Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a major medical journal points out that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals buying these treatments must be informed of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to original weight within about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful return of hunger.

"I experienced something activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Use

Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
